21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a visionary space that celebrates and explores the innovation of design. It inspires visitors to look beyond the conventional and explore the limitless possibilities of design. Whether you’re a design professional or simply someone who appreciates the beauty and functionality of well-thought-out design, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT offers a unique and enriching experience that is sure to ignite your imagination.

The Hollyhock House AKA The Aline Barnsdall House

Select architecture students from USC get to live in the house as part of an architect in residence program. Los Angeles is full of beautiful Craftsman houses, but the Gamble House in Pasadena, designed inside and out by brothers Charles and Henry Greene is the cream of the crop. The house was built in 1908 as a summer house for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter and Gamble Company. The house incorporates Japanese elements into a Swiss chalet framework using craftsman techniques. Every detail in the house from the peg wood paneling to the stained glass windows was designed by the brothers, with Charles being responsible for more of the interior details. The purpose of the space and its rotating exhibits is to shine a new, inquisitive light on the design consideration and detail behind everyday items and events.

Before that, Japan was known as the Edo period, when samurai ruled the country, people wore kimonos and wooden one-storey buildings were the norm. ‘We live surrounded by a diversity of designs, but we ask how many of them deserve the title of The Original. This exhibition calls attention to products created with genuine verve, fundamental charm, purity, boldness, and strength, each of which we call The Original,’ explained Takahiro Tsuchida. The museum embodies Ando’s signature architectural style, characterized by clean lines, geometric precision, and a focus on spatial experience.

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is itself enhenced by synergy with those facilities in the area. Claud Beelman, 1931 Art Deco buildings washed in a coat of color were once the standard in L.A. But these days, Claud Beelman’s green terra cotta design for the Los Angeles Jewelry Center is one of the few remaining examples.

The turquoise finish, terra cotta sunburst over the entrance and the blue glow of the clock tower are all headturners. High-end department stores have dwindled, Westlake is no longer the lap of luxury and the copper turret on the Bullocks Wilshire has since tarnished green—but none of that diminishes the elegance of this Art Deco landmark. It was a department store built for the car, and even though its cash registers have been shut for two decades (now it’s a law school), its poise and strong vertical lines still catch motorists’ eyes. When Richard Neutra's wife Dione dies in 1990, she left the house to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, which administers the house as a museum. From featured interviews to design resources, we've got plenty of inspo for you to soak up.

Additionally, content such as tours and tickets, hotels and apartments are commercial content. Co-directed by graphic designer Taku Satoh, product designer Naoto Fukazawa, and fashion designer Issey Miyake, it’s run by three of the country’s biggest names in design, but accessible for even the most amateur of design fans. Sitting in the middle of Roppongi’s Midtown Garden, 21_21 Design Sight is a sleek, futuristic gallery and the home of new and groundbreaking design-centric exhibits. As more developments continue to bulldoze their way into Roppongi, the startling mix of old and new becomes increasingly complex. Strolling around the neighborhoods just west of Roppongi Hills will give you a sense of what the area felt like ten years ago.

Set on the edge of Midtown Garden, which is located in the Tokyo Midtown complex, a large portion of the gallery space is underground. The idea for the roof as one sheet of folded steel was inspired by Issey Miyake's A-POC "A Piece of Cloth" concept. This exhibition employs a tool called "Future Compass" to trigger ideas about the future. We use it to visualize perspectives on a future which is already present today, and which can be uncovered through our contemporary behavior and creativity. We have engaged a range of participants, from designers, artists and thinkers, to engineers and researchers, who provide their own perspectives on the future. These ideas have been generated from the act of pondering timelines, whether familiar or yet unknown.

For those of us that hold a great interest in architecture and design, the Design Sight (read as “two-one two-one design sight”) behind Roppongi's Tokyo Midtown building is certainly worth a visit. This private design museum, Japan’s first, opened in 2007 and was intended first of all as a tribute to past achievements of Japan in the area of (industrial, architectural, environmental and fashion) design. Secondly, it should also function as a beacon of inspiration on how to approach future endeavors from a design and aesthetic point of view.

Immerse yourself in the world of design, explore the curated exhibitions, and witness firsthand the transformative power of Tadao Ando’s visionary approach. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the choice of materials reflects Ando’s commitment to sustainability. Concrete, a durable and long-lasting material, aligns with the architect’s ethos of creating structures that stand the test of time. The museum’s facade not only tells a visual story but also underscores the importance of responsible material choices in contemporary architecture. Ando has prioritized accessibility, ensuring that the museum is well-connected to public transportation and pedestrian pathways. This intentional design choice fosters a sense of community engagement and invites people from all walks of life to partake in the world of design.
